Buying clothes for a Sphynx cat

Hairless cats are long-bodied and narrow-chested for their weight, which is why ordinary pet sizing fails on them: a garment that fits the chest is usually short in the back, and one that fits the length hangs off the shoulders. Four things decide whether a piece gets worn or ends up in a drawer.

• Measure, do not guess. Chest girth behind the front legs, and length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Most brands run a size small on a Sphynx.
• Breathable knits only. Cotton, bamboo and modal. Wool itches on bare skin, and glitter, sequins and loose appliqué come off in a mouth.
• Seams matter more than the print. Flat seams, no rough overlocking under the armpits — that is where a cat gets rubbed raw and starts refusing clothes.
• One outfit per day. Skin oil goes into fabric fast. Clothes worn two days in a row are a chin-acne machine.
