Sphynx Cat Health: Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), Testing and Lifespan
Hairless cats are not delicate, but the breed does carry a short list of conditions worth understanding — and one that should shape who you buy from. We test for these because the alternative is finding out later.
hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM): the one that matters most
hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a thickening of the heart muscle, and it is the most significant inherited health concern in the Sphynx. It can develop without obvious symptoms and can appear in a cat that looked perfect a year earlier.
The only meaningful check is an echocardiogram — a heart ultrasound — performed by a vet with cardiac experience, repeated periodically through a breeding cat’s life. A single clear scan at one year old is not a lifetime guarantee, and a breeder who says “our lines are clear” without producing scan dates is telling you nothing. Ask for the reports.
The rest of the list
- Skin conditions. Bare skin can develop irritation, yeast overgrowth, comedones and, less often, fungal infection. Mostly managed with sensible bathing and prompt attention.
- Dental disease. The breed is prone to gingivitis and early tooth problems. Home brushing plus real veterinary dental care makes a large difference.
- Ear infections. A consequence of open ears and fast wax build-up, and the reason weekly cleaning is on the routine.
- Sunburn and cold sensitivity. Not diseases, but real risks. No coat means UV exposure and heat loss both need managing.
- Hereditary myopathy. A muscular condition documented in the breed, with a DNA test available — which is part of why DNA testing belongs in a breeding programme.
- Digestive sensitivity. Some individuals have touchy stomachs and do best on a consistent diet rather than frequent changes.
Lifespan
A well-bred, indoor Sphynx that is fed properly and seen by a vet regularly commonly lives into its early or mid teens, and plenty go further. Genetics set the range; routine veterinary care, a healthy weight and early attention to problems decide where in that range your cat lands.
What good breeding actually prevents
Testing does not make a cat immortal. What it does is remove the avoidable: it keeps known heart disease and known genetic conditions out of the lines, it avoids pairings that stack risk, and it means problems are found by a specialist before a kitten is placed rather than by a family two years later.
